Types of Clean Truck Check
Diesel Smog Checks
Diesel Opacity “Smoke” Check
Exhaust opacity tests, also known as diesel smoke checks, apply to trucks model year 2012 or older. This type of Clean Truck Check test includes measuring the diesel particulates in the exhaust gases using CARB-approved testing equipment, as well as a visual inspection of the vehicle’s emission system components. Test and inspection results must be manually entered into CARB Clean Truck Check forms, and emailed to California Air Resources Board.
OBD Diesel Smog Check
On-board Diagnostic (OBD) tests apply to 2013 and newer diesel trucks. This type of test uses CARB-compliant Clean Truck Check testing equipment to communicate with a vehicle’s OBD data using J1939 or J1979 ports to verify that the emission system components are functioning correctly, and that a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) has not been manually reset without the required repairs. Test results are transmitted immediately to your CTC-VIS account.
